Visitation

I stargazed from my bedroll.
Out of perfect quiet
a rush of living dark
tore through the Milky Way
with muffled wings, a great
shadow wheeled and paused
over my heart, then dropped
earthward till the shriek
of no pale rabbit broke
my breath. The startled owl
slid from our shared panic
and left to silence the icy
scrawl of our galaxy.
